Videos on Job's

Ten Commandments of Résumés:
I found the video on the ten commandments of a résumé to be very interesting and helpful.  First they tell you to market yourself to show that you will benefit them by having the skills and knowledge.  I didn’t realize that your résumé should be more of a sales pitch then just fact and to make sure to excite the employer.  Also to make sure to list why you are qualified for this job which seems like you should cater each résumé for each job application.  I would be sure to use all these points and the rest of the Ten Commandments when I go to make my résumé so that it will increase the likelihood that a company will invite me in for an interview.  This would hopefully lead me to getting the job of my dreams.

Finding a Job:
I found this video on finding a job to be helpful, because it wasn’t just information, but also about how to find what you’re passionate about.  I found that the best way to get a job is through a referral, which I already assumed it to be, so that wasn’t useful.  Although I found the idea of finding someone with a connection to be useful about how you need to put yourself out there.  I also thought the idea of making a blog about your skills almost like an online résumé to be a really cool and good idea.  Also thought it was interesting that you should put keywords in your résumé so that the machine will find your résumé.  All of the things and more I will be using in my future job search.  I also learned about what should be in the cover letter paragraph by paragraph which I never knew before.  I will also use all the information on résumés when I begin to create my own to help land me the job of my dreams.

Résumé

In my nineteen years of liven I have yet to write a résumé, and would still be saying that next year if it wasn’t for this business communication class.  I have received little advice on writing a résumé since I have yet to go through the process of writing one.  The little advice I have heard is to make sure it looks professional, is typed, and is kept to one page.  I would think the general form education, experience, and personal detail would work fine in writing a résumé for anyone.  However since I have little amount of experience I might want to add another section to the résumé so that it looks long enough and consist of less white space.  If I had to write my résumé today I would fallow the outline the book gives and then ask for outside help from either one of my parents of my business communication teacher.

Persuasive Writing

The example of persuasive writing I found online was one that was a student’s essay written to convince people not to smoke.  The way the student tried to convince people were by using the logical based appeal.  The format this was written in was a five paragraph essay with three reasons listed in three separate body paragraphs.  The audience he is trying to convince is people who are smoking right now.  He takes the approach of trying to scare a smoker with a long list of facts.  The voice he takes is one as an authoritarian or parent type tone.  He communicates the long list of dangers connected with smoking.  I feel that he does this an effective manner and if I was a person who smoked I would be persuaded not to.  I would have given more statistical fact then that kid did in his paper.

Bad News

The way a person response to news that causes you to have a negative emotional response deepens on the situation. In some cases you have to hide your emotion from it and other times you can include it in the response. For example if your boss informs you on a new policy that everyone is to fallow like having to clock in and out of work. In this situation you have to take your feeling of upset and swallow it, and this is because your boss would just find you getting upset as a bad thing and could cause grounds for firing. Now on the other hand if a colleague informs you about his new plans and wants your opinion on the plan you would allow your emotions in the response. This means if you disagree with his plan you should tell him, but before you do that you should go over how it sounds because you don’t want to come across disrespectful or angry at your colleague.

Sample of Business Writing

The sample business writing I found was written by Wells Fargo. It has to do with owning a home and setting up your mortgage with them. The format they used for writing this was to put the different points into spate boxes. They made the broader point on the left side and then explained more on the right. I feel this was effective as it doesn’t make a customer feel overwhelmed by information that has a tendency to be confusing to people. By reading this I am able to understand the greater benefits that Wells Fargo has to offer. I feel the main reason it is an effective is I would consider using them if I was purchasing a home in the near future.

Companies Websites

I feel like it is a bad idea for companies to use overly formal words and corporate-speak. As a person who uses the internet I feel that when on an overly complicated website I am less likely to go on the site again or purchase anything from the company. Unless the company’s website will only be used by people who are able to comprehend the corporate-speak. You are essentially alienating your perceptive clients. I believe that many companies communicate this way because the powers at the top of these companies have been around for a while. As a result of this these owners are hesitant to change anything.  It as if they believe that since their company is making money and has been they have no motivation to change the way they operate. One thing is for sure that if you want to make more money you need more people to be on your website. They need to like what they say, and be able to comprehend it.  Lastly they need to leave the website liking what they saw and planning to spend their money on whatever it is your company is selling.

Insurance Email

The main problem with the insurance email is that is way too technical and unclear. The first paragraph is very confusing and that is a serious problem since if people don’t like the start of the email they are less likely to read it in detail and just skim through it.  It doesn’t explain the change in a clear way and doesn’t tell people what the benefits of this new thing are. I find it is important to get the employees to be for any change or your run the risk of them not doing it or not doing it correctly.  The email should get the employees excited in and agree with the change, but it does not do that. This email would just leave employees scratching their head and being against the powers above them.
